Notes

Originally New Guinea. This is the cultivated plant now grown for sugar production throughout the tropics, developed by hybridization of several Saccharum spp. in southeast Asia in ancient times. Introduced in Mediterranean, Western Asia, Himalayas, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh,  Indochina, Malesia, China (including Taiwan), Korea, western and central Africa, Madagascar, USA, Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, South America (northwest, Brazil), New Zealand
