Distribution details in Italy
First recorded in: 1998
Pest status declared by NPPO: present, in specific parts of the Member State, where host crop(s) are grown (2019-06)
From CABI Pest map 576 (2012): Present, restricted distribution
EPPO Reporting Service (1998/161) : 6 adults caught in pheromone traps in vicinity of Venezia airport in 1998-07. No damage in field. Intensive monitoring.
EPPO Reporting Service (2000/031) : eradication programme continued in 1999. Only 2 adults were caught, in the previously infected area near Venezia. Negative trapping results in Lombardia, Emilia-Romagna, Piemonte.
EPPO Reporting Service (2001/003) : in 2000, maize monoculture was prohibited in the quarantine area near Venezia. Some very small plots (for domestic consumption), where maize had been grown for 4 years, were found infested. Insecticide treatments were applied, and monitoring verified that no further insects were caught. However, 3 specimens were caught for the first time in Lombardia, near Milano Malpensa airport.
EPPO Reporting Service (2001/046) : maize production prohibited in areas where D. virgifera was trapped in Lombardia. Monitoring intensified.
EPPO Reporting Service (2002/001) : containment measures maintained. In Veneto, adults were caught in the infested area and buffer zone, and the appropriate action taken. A few catches also outside buffer zone, leading to the definition of new infested areas. Interruption of maize monoculture is key element of programme. Eradication is still the aim. In Lombardia and Piemonte, the extent of infestation is much greater and eradication is not feasible.
EPPO Reporting Service (2003/001) : in Veneto, suppression and containment have been effective and populations were minimal in 2002. The pest was trapped for the first time in Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, where the same strategies will be applied. In Piemonte and Lombardia, in contrast, spread is continuing, and the control campaign will be intensified.
EPPO Reporting Service (2004/058) : in 2003, very low populations in Veneto. Small numbers of adults again trapped in Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. Almost all Lombardia infested, but no economic damage. Nearly all provinces in Piemonte now infested (no containment strategy). First trappings in Emilia-Romagna and Trentino-Alto-Adige.
EPPO Reporting Service (2010/028) : in 2009 caught in several regions of Northern Italy but still not found at the south of Emilia-Romagna.
EPPO Reporting Service (2011/101) : first found in Toscana in 2010.
EPPO Reporting Service (2013/242) : new outbreak found in Umbria in 2013.
From NPPO (2019-06): Termination of official phytosanitary measures following the adoption of the Commission Implementing Decision 2014/62/EU repealing 2003/766/EC.
