Notes

Native to Mediterranean, Macaronesia (Canary Islands). This is the wild species from which the cultivated artichoke (C. scolymus, q.v.) is derived. It is cultivated for its leaf bases, cooked as a green vegetableSome authors do not consider C. scolymus to be distinct from C. cardunculus. This is also reflected in the common names.
