Mediterranean, Macaronesia (Canary Islands). Introduced in other European countries, southeast Asia, North and South America. This is the wild species from which the cultivated artichoke (C. scolymus, q.v.) is derived. Some authors do not consider C. scolymus to be distinct from C. cardunculus. This is also reflected in common names
