Cynara cardunculus(CYUCA)
Overview Code created in: 1996-10-28
- EPPO Code: CYUCA
- Preferred name: Cynara cardunculus
- Authority: Linnaeus
Native to Mediterranean, Macaronesia (Canary Islands). This is the wild species from which the cultivated artichoke (C. scolymus, q.v.) is derived. It is cultivated for its leaf bases, cooked as a green vegetable. Some authors do not consider C. scolymus to be distinct from C. cardunculus. This is also reflected in the common names.
