Reputed to originate in the Middle East, but now considered native throughout Europe (except north) and the Mediterranean area, to Macaronesia, Caucasus, Central Asia, Western Asia, Himalayas, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indochina, Malesia, China, Japan, Korea, Africa (throughout), Madagascar, New Guinea, Australia (throughout). Cultivated as a lawn grass in warmer regions of the world (frequently invasive). Introduced in Canada (British Columbia, Newfoundland), USA (throughout), Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, South America (except northeastern Brazil, southern Chile), New Zealand
