Notes

Central Asia, Western Asia (Afghanistan, Pakistan), China (northwest). Widely cultivated, so that wild plants can no longer reliably be distinguished. Cultivars suited for fibre production are grown worldwide, and frequently naturalized as weeds. Other cultivars are grown for production of the drug marijuana, and their cultivation is prohibited in many countries (see subsp. indica)
