Practically all Europe, Black Sea and Caucasus, Siberia, Central Asia, China, Mongolia. Cultivated as an ornamental tree, with many varieties. Introduced into North America, where weeping and cut-leaved forms are grown as ornamentals, and the species is considered to be potentially invasive
