It probably originated in southern Asia (India, Indochina), from where it was taken in ancient times to China, Malesia, most of Africa (except Ethiopia, Somalia, Namibia, Cape), and post-Columbus, to USA, Caribbean, South America (northwest). In Eurasia, it is cultivated at least in the area of Russia, Black Sea, Caucasus and Central Asia
