Notes

Euromediterranean region (except north and southeast), Siberia, Central Asia (Kazakhstan), Russian Far East, Western Asia (Iran), Himalayas, India, Bangladesh, Indochina, Malesia, China (including Taiwan), Japan, Korea. Cultivated, particularly in China, for its edible fruits. Introduced in USA (eastern).  Other species and varieties of Trapa have been described, in various parts of the world, but the current view is to combine most into T. natans. A var. bispinosa is distinguished in Asia
