Notes

Mexico, Central America (not Africa, despite its common names). Cultivated as ornamental bedding plants in a diversity of cultivars, often escaping. Introduced in Europe (mainly western Euromediterranean), Caucasus, Central Asia,  Russian Far East, Western Asia (Oman, Pakistan), Himalayas, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indochina (except Cambodia), Malesia (Java, Philippines), China (Taiwan), Korea, Cameroon, Tchad, Ethiopia, Zaïre to Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa, USA (scattered), Caribbean (Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico), South America (Guyanas to Colombia, to Bolivia)

Some authors consider that T. patula (q.v.) is conspecific with T. erecta
