Notes

Sénégal to Ethiopia. A species raised in cultivation in Saharan and eastern Africa, which exists in a great number of varieties, many of which have been given separate scientific names. This is no longer considered valid, but certain names have been provisionally retained in the database because they correspond to well known and distinct varietal types. Introduced in Euromediterranean region, Russian Far East, Central Asia, Western Asia, Himalayas, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indochina, Malesia, China, Japan, Central Africa, Madagascar, USA, Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, South America (northwest, Brazil), New Zealand. Genome sequenced in 2009.
