Overview Code created in: 2015-08-16
- EPPO Code: SOLSC
- Preferred name: Solanum scabrum
- Authority: Miller
West Africa. Of uncertain origin, this species is cultivated in Africa as a vegetable for its leaves and fruits. Introduced as a vegetable in some European countries, and also particularly in USA where it is known as "garden huckleberry". Referred to by some authors as a form of S. nigrum. The American forms are selected cultivars grown for fruit production. "Huckleberries " are native American species of the Ericaceous genera Vaccinium and Gaylussacia, so the use of this common name for S. scabrum is confusing.
