Western Europe, Mediterranean (except southeast), Caucasus, Macaronesia. The nominate subspecies occurs throughout the range of the species, while subsp. hemipoa (q.v.) occurs only in the South. Introduced in Himalayas, Korea, South Africa, USA (locally), Mexico, South America (from Bolivia southwards), Australia (except Northern and Queensland), New Zealand
