Eastern Africa. Cultivated as an ornamental and for the oil obtained from its seeds, used medicinally as a purgative. Widespread around the Mediterranean, where it is a ruderal weed, and also introduced into most of Africa, Indian subcontinent, southeast Asia, North, Central and South America, Australia
