Notes

Europe (except northeast), northern Mediterranean, Black Sea, Caucasus. Subsp. petraea is replaced by subsp. iberica (q.v.) in the most easterly part of the range. Cultivated as an ornamental tree, with many variant forms, and introduced into various countries (e.g. Japan) for this purpose
