Indigenous in the North. However, the Chinese Administration of Animal and Plant Quarantine reports that this is a mistaken identification; the pest concerned is Popillia quadriguttata.
According to Chen et al. (2014), it is considered that 20th century references to the Japanese beetle in China (Fleming, 1972) were in fact P. quadriguttata.
