Hayes et al. (2012) consider that P. maculata probably occurs in Bolivia, Ecuador and Perú considering the known records in del Plata and Amazonas basins, the hydrographic continuity between these 3 countries and their similar climates. For the moment, this asumption has not yet been confirmed.
Ramirez et al. (2020, 2022) did not found P. maculata in their studies but another species P. nobilis.
