Basic information
  • EPPO code: PHSAU
  • Preferred name: Vigna radiata
  • Authority: (Linnaeus) Wilczek

Iran, where it was domesticated in ancient times. Cultivated for its green seeds, which are also germinated to produce "bean sprouts". Cultivation spread principally to India, China, and southeast Asia, and the crop is now more or less frequently grown throughout most of the tropics. Many common names refer to the word "mung", which properly belongs to the related Vigna mungo (q.v.); in practice, the common names overlap.
