Western Europe. Introduced elsewhere in Europe, Caucasus, Canada (British Columbia, Ontario), USA (northwest, Texas to northeast, Australia (Western, New South Wales, Tasmania), New Zealand. Very widely cultivated as an ornamental bulb plant, often in mass plantings in semi-wild situations (e.g. roadsides)
