Practically all Euromediterranean region, Caucasus, Central Asia (except Tadzhikistan), Western Asia (Arabia to Pakistan), Tchad to Ethiopia. Widely cultivated as a salad vegetable. Introduced in Russian Far East, India, Indochina (Vietnam), Malesia (Java, Borneo, Philippines), China (including Taiwan), Korea, Mauretania to Niger, Cameroon, Zaïre and East Africa to Angola and Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Canada, USA, Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, South America (except Brazil), New Guinea, Australia (except New South Wales), New Zealand.
