Metamasius sericeus and Metamasius carbonarius were initially considered as distinct species, and later as subspecies of Metamasius hemipterus. Palmieri et al. (2022) based on molecular evidence proposed that the subspecies of M. hemipterus form two separate species: M. sericeus (covering M. h. carbonarius and M. h. sericeus) and M. hemipterus (covering M. hemipterus carbonarius). The previous code for M. sericeus is maintained for the new species, and M. hemipterus is covered by the present code.
