For many years Gonipterus scutellatus was considered to be a single species, but taxonomic and molecular studies have shown that it is a complex of cryptic species. This complex includes at least 8 different species (including G. balteatus, G. platensis, G. pulverulentus, G. scutellatus sensu stricto and other species which remains to be described).
