Notes

Most of Europe, extending to Caucasus, SIberia, Western Asia and Central Asia. Origin in fact uncertain, but probably Central Asia. Widely cultivated in Europe and the Mediterranean area in the Middle Ages as a source of dye, and now naturalized in many countries. Various subspecies names have been attributed, but their value is questionable
