Most of Europe, Mediterranean (rare), Caucasus, Siberia, Russian Far East, Central Asia, Western Asia, Himalayas, China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, North America (northern, including Alaska). Many subspecies and varieties of C. palustris have been named, but these are mostly not accepted
