Not known in the wild. A cultivated plant in South India and Sri Lanka, which is now grown throughout southeast Asia. One of the largest palms in the world (up to 25 m), with the largest inflorescence of any plant (6-8 m). Monocarpic (dies after flowering). Used for thatching, and in ancient times as a writing material.
