Peru, Bolivia, Brazil (northern). Cultivated for its fruits, which are the hottest and spiciest of the chillis. Introduced in Central America, West Africa (Guinea-Bissau). Despite its name (which was given in the eighteenth century), C. chinense has no connection with China
