Colletotrichum xanthii has in the past been considered as a synonym of C. acutatum. However, there are no living strains available and the taxonomic position of this species is unclear (2019-06)
Although sometimes considered as a synonym of C. acutatum, Glomerella acutata was shown to be an hybrid, product of a laboratory crossing of one C. acutatum strain and one C. fioriniae strain (2019-06)
