This virus was only observed in 3 trees in Japan in 1984. Initial isolates were lost and the disease has not reappeared. It should not be confused with citrus yellow mottle-associated virus recently reported from Pakistan. Aknadibossian et al. (2023) recommended that this phantom disease should be disregarded and that this name should no longer used in scientific literature.
