Southern Europe to India and eastern Asia, introduced  elsewhere. Cultivated as a green salad vegetable.

It should be noted that the names of cultivated Cichorium spp. in European languages are contradictory, e.g. "chicory " in English is "endive" in French, and vice versa. See also C. intybus
