South Africa. Cultivated as an ornamental. Introduced in Western Europe, Mediterranean, USA (California, Florida), Mexico, South America (Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, southern Brazil, Uruguay), Australia (except Northern, Queensland), New Zealand). Flowers typically yellow, but variants with flowers pinkish purple, or pink with yellow base, have been named vars. rubescens and chrysophthalmus, respectively
