Indochina, China. One of the most widely distributed and commercially useful bamboos, widely grown for building material, for paper and for its edible shoots. Introduced in Europe in the 18th century and in southern USA in the 19th,  and then in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malesia (Malaya, Java, Sulawesi, Moluccas, southeastern islands), tropical Africa (Mali to Zaïre), Madagascar, Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, South America (northwest, Brazil), New Guinea
