This form (originally Aster tripolium) has a northern distribution, occurring along the northern Atlantic, North Sea and Baltic coasts, ahd also across Siberia to the Russian Far East, Japan, Korea. It is distinct from subsp. pannonicum (formerly Aster pannonicus) which occurs around the Mediterranean, and inland in central and eastern Europe, Central Asia, China. Because of the confusion of the names, it is not always clear to which subspecies the common names apply. Besides, some authors do not distinguish the subspecies
