Cultivated as an ornamental. Introduced in Europe. Var. margaritacea is the American plant, which has been introduced in Europe. There are several varieties in Asia, with a confused nomenclature (angustior, angustifolia, cinnamomea). Var. yedoensis (q.v.) is endemic to Japan. The others are mainly in China, extending to the Himalayas.
