Western Asia (Yemen to Pakistan), Himalayas, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indochina, Malesia, China (including Taiwan), Africa generally (except Niger, Zambia, Zimbabwe), New Guinea, Australia (Western, Northern, Queensland). Introduced in Mediterranean region, Japan, USA (southern), Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, South America (northwest, to Bolivia and eastern Brazil), New Zealand. A widespread weed. Var. sicula (q.v.) is unevenly distributed in the southern part of the Euromediterranean region
