First report of Lycorma delicatula in Hungary
The spotted lanternfly Lycorma delicatula (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae - EPPO A1 List) is an Asian pest which was introduced in the USA is 2014 (EPPO RS 2015/023) and then spread to several other US states despite official control measures. It was first reported in the EPPO region in the Republic of Moldova in August 2026 (RS 2026/183).
L. delicatula is first reported from Hungary. In July 2026 a private individual reported the presence of an unidentified planthopper in his garden in Lakitelek (Bács-Kiskun County, southern Hungary) to the NPPO of Hungary. Samples were taken by the NPPO, and the pest was identified as Lycorma delicatula based on laboratory tests. Both nymphs and adults were observed on Parthenocissus sp. plants, and the private individual reported observations of the pest at the same site in 2025. Further investigations are ongoing to determine the extent and duration of the infestation and the possible pathway of introduction. A possible association with wooden crates previously brought to the property is being investigated. Eradication measures are applied.
