First report of Erysiphe corylacearum in Serbia


Erysiphe corylacearum is a powdery mildew of hazelnuts (Corylus spp.) native to East Asia that has been reported across Eastern, Central and Southern Europe (EPPO RS 2021/042, RS2021/049, RS 2021/249RS 2022/218, RS 2024/027, RS 2024/075, RS 2024/164).  


In Serbia, during a survey of a hazelnut orchard in Bački Jarak town (Temerin municipality, South Bačka District), powdery mildew, caused by E. corylacearum, was observed on 90% of common hazel trees (Corylus avellana) in May 2023. The pest was identified by morphological and molecular tests. 


The situation of Erysiphe corylacearum in Serbia can be described as: Present, restricted distribution.
