S. schevyrewi originates from Mongolia and Northern Asia and has been introduced into North America in the 1990s. The source of introduction is unknown but it is suspected that the insect was introduced with wood packaging material. According to Jacobi et al. (2013), it is the dominant elm bark beetle in the Rocky Mountain region. It is another vector of the Dutch elm disease pathogens but probably NOT more efficient than S. multistriatus.
EPPO Reporting Service (2005/181) : recently trapped in Colorado and Utah, but previously (1990s) recorded in other states, and in fact quite widespread, principally in the Midwest.
