Although Canova & d'Ercole first recorded this fungus in Italy in 1972, Canova (1983) indicated that this was only in a few nurseries using material introduced from USA, and also specified in 1983 that the disease is not present in Italian strawberry production. There are no other CABI-abstracted records since that date, and the present situation in Italy is uncertain.
