Native to North America. It was first record as a pest problem in Canada in 1936, and outbreaks have been recorded in Nova Scotia as early as 1942. High populations have been observed in Newfoundland, Québec and Ontario. In the 2000s, longer and more severe outbreaks have been reported from western Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.
