Comments
First reported from the USA in California in 2010. Identified on Alnus rhombifolia leaves collected in 2010 in a commercial nursery in Santa Cruz county, and again in 2011, in samples from another commercial nursery in Santa Barbara county. However, a specimen of M. hiratsukanum (collected in 1931 from California) could be found in the USDA Systematic Mycology Herbarium. It seems that this rust has been present in California since 1931, but has only recently been found causing a disease in nursery plants.
