Hawaii (only record in Pacific). Practically confined to California - EPPO Reporting Service 506/02 (1990-06) (data of Spencer in Kahn, Plant Protection and Quarantine, Vol II). Introduced into glasshouses in Florida and Virginia (Poe, 1981), but considered present in California only in 1994.
EPPO Reporting Service (2002/010) : recent DNA sequence data shows that all North American populations are a distinct species Liriomyza langei. South American populations are authentic L. huidobrensis and are those which have spread to other continents.
The NPPO officially stated that research has indicated that the pest previously believed to be L. huidobrensis in the United States is actually L. langei (NAPPO, 2009). In such a case, it is considered that L. langei is a distinct species (and no longer a synonym of L. huidobrensis) as proposed by Sheffer & Lewis (2011).
