Comments
According to Gonthier et al. (2004), the North American P group of H. annosum was introduced into Italy via infected wood (e.g. crates, pallets or other wooden objects) brought by US troops during World War II (in the woodlands of the Castelporziano woodlands Presidential Estate). This has resulted in an invasion extending over 100 km of the Mediterranean coast near Rome, with significant mortality of Pinus pinea trees.
