Comments
For some years before 1971, a bacterial shoot blight of pear was observed in Iwamizawa City (Hokkaido) on Pyrus ussuriensis cv. Senryou. It was reported to occur again in 1995 and 1996, but eradicated in 1999. Erwinia isolates from Japan were found most closely related to E. pyrifoliae isolates from Korea. However, it is still unclear whether the Japanese isolates belong to E. pyrifoliae.

In 2007, Erwinia isolates were detected on P. communis in Yamagata Prefecture, Honshu (the disease was subsequently eradicated). These Ewinia isolates were considered distinct from E. amylovora and E. pyrifoliae.
