The name of this species has been subject to some controversy (as this Nearctic species is not to be confused with an African species which had also been called at some point 'Choristoneura occidentalis'). Molecular studies (Fagua et al. 2019) led to the redescription of the genus Choristoneura, and reinstated the original name of this species. In addition, Brunet et al. (2017) proposed that C. occidentalis (univoltine populations) and C. biennis (biennial populations) should be referred to as C. occidentalis occidentalis and C. occidentalis biennis, respectively.
