Sporadic pest in major Chinese apple production areas (e.g. Shaanxi and Shandong) but in Xinjiang, where it was first discovered in an apple orchard in Xinyuan, it rapidly invaded wild apple (Malus sieversii) forests in Yili Valley of Tianshan Mountains, where it has killed thousands of wild apple trees.
