First report of Xanthomonas citri pv. fuscans in the Netherlands
As part of official surveys, 180 fields of beans were surveyed in 2025 and 2026 in the Netherlands. Xanthomonas citri pv. fuscans (EPPO A2 list), causal agent of bacterial blight of bean, was detected in two fields of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) in 2025, and three fields of P. vulgaris and one field of broad bean (Vicia faba) in 2026. All findings were recorded in the province of Zeeland. Symptomatic plants with wilting and necrotic spots on leaves were observed. Sampling and testing confirmed the presence of X. citri pv. fuscans in all samples.
The origin of these infections is unclear. It is uncertain whether the bacterium can survive in these fields. In the EU X. citri pv. fuscans is regulated as a RNQP (Regulated Non-Quarantine Pest) for seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris. Consequently, no further measures are taken in the Netherlands for these findings.
Measures are in place for seeds for sowing of Phaseolus vulgaris in line with EU requirements stipulated in EU regulation 2019/2072.
The pest status of Xanthomonas citri pv. fuscans in the Netherlands is officially declared as: Present, few occurrences.
