First report of Xylella fastidiosa subsp. multiplex in Basilicata region (Italy)
In Italy, Xylella fastidiosa subsp. multiplex (EU emergency measures) was first detected in Toscana in 2018 (EPPO RS 2019/016) and in Lazio in 2021 (RS 2022/111).
During official surveys conducted in 2026, X. fastidiosa subsp. multiplex was detected for the first time in Basilicata region. It was detected in August 2026 on an almond tree (Prunus dulcis) in a cultivated area of olive trees intercropped with almond and fruit trees in Matera municipality. The pest identity was confirmed by molecular testing. Eradication measures are applied. A delimiting survey is being undertaken.
The pest status of Xylella fastidiosa subsp. multiplex in Italy is officially declared as: Present, only in some parts of the Member State concerned, under eradication, under containment in case eradication is impossible.
