Update on the situation of Agrilus planipennis in Hungary
In Hungary, the emerald ash borer Agrilus planipennis (Coleoptera: Buprestidae – EPPO A2 List) was first reported in Beregsurány (region of Észak-Alföld, eastern Hungary) in June 2026 when one adult was caught in a trap (EPPO RS 2026/137).
Surveys conducted in Beregsurány after the first finding resulted in additional adults caught in traps as well as the detection of larvae in symptomatic ash trees.
Further surveys detected the pest in the neighbouring county of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén (region of Észak-Alföld, eastern Hungary). Seven adults were caught in traps and several ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) showing signs of the pest (bark splitting and D-shaped exit holes) were found. A demarcated area has been established, and delimiting surveys are continuing to determine the extent of this infestation.
Official phytosanitary measures are applied to eradicate the pest. They also include surveys and communication activities.
The pest status of Agrilus planipennis in Hungary is officially declared as: Transient, actionable, under eradication.
