Recent changes in virus taxonomy
Changes adopted by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) in March 2025 are summarized in an article by Rubino et al. (2025). The changes considered relevant for plant health purposes are highlighted bellow, focusing on species that already had an EPPO Code. Necessary modifications have been implemented in EPPO Global Database.
The following species have now a binomial name:
- apple necrotic mosaic virus (ApNMV) (EU regulated pest): Ilarvirus ApNMV
- tomato necrotic spot virus (ToNSV): Ilarvirus ToNSV
- potato rugose stunting virus (PotRSV): Torradovirus nanorugosum.
In the family Rhabdoviridae, the genus Cytorhabdovirus is abolished and three new genera are created (Alphacytorhabdovirus, Betacytorhabdovirus and Gammacytorhabdovirus). Existing species in the genus Cytorhabdovirus are assigned to one of the three new genera. This is the case for the following species that have information in EPPO Global Database:
- strawberry crinkle virus (EU RNQP): Alphacytorhabdovirus fragariarugosus
- lettuce necrotic yellows virus: Alphacytorhabdovirus lactucanecante,
- Colocasia bobone disease virus (CBDaV): Betacytorhabdovirus colocasiae
- barley yellow striate mosaic virus (BYSMV): Betacytorhabdovirus hordei
The following species for which an EPPO Code existed have been abolished:
- Cytorhabdovirus brassicae (broccoli necrotic yellows virus): BNYV00 (regulated in Jordan)
- Cytorhabdovirus festucae (Festuca leaf streak virus): FLSV00
- Cytorhabdovirus sonchi (Sonchus virus): SONV00
- Cytorhabdovirus tritici (wheat American striate mosaic virus): WASMV0
- cucumber soil-borne virus: CUSBV0 (regulated in Jordan)
- poinsettia mosaic virus: PNMV00
- ahlum waterborne virus: AWBV00
- bean mild mosaic virus: BMMV00
- chenopodium necrosis virus: CHNV00
- weddel waterborne virus: WWBV00
