New outbreak of Meloidogyne chitwoodi in Spain

In Spain, the root knot nematode Meloidogyne chitwoodi (EPPO A2 List) was first detected in 2021 on potato (Solanum tuberosum) in Zamora province (Castilla y León) (RS 2021/015) and eradication measures were applied.

A new outbreak was detected in October 2025 in the Autonomous Region of Castilla y León. The pest was detected in 3 ware potato plots (7.58 ha in total) located in the municipalities of Sieteiglesias de Tormes and Pelayos (Salamanca province). The 3 plots belong to the same farm and used the same lot of seed potatoes. Trace back studies showed that the seed potatoes originated in another EU Member State.

A demarcated area has been defined, and eradication measures are applied.

The pest status of Meloidogyne chitwoodi in Spain is officially declared as: Present, under eradication, only in some parts of the Member State concerned.
