First report of Euwallacea fornicatus in Türkiye

Euwallacea fornicatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae, EPPO A2 List as part of Euwallacea fornicatus sensu lato and an A1 quarantine pest for Türkiye) is first reported from Türkiye.

In 2024, symptoms of dieback and wilting were observed in various ornamental trees (Acer negundo, Acer platanoides, and Platanus acerifolia) in Eminönü (Istanbul province, Marmara region). Field studies and laboratory analyses revealed the presence of an ambrosia beetle species. The identity of the pest was confirmed by morphological and molecular (DNA barcoding) tests on adult beetles. This is the first record of Acer platanoides as a reproductive host of E. fornicatus. The authors note that the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Directorate of Parks and Gardens have initiated eradication programmes against this pest.

The pest status of Euwallacea fornicatus in Türkiye is officially declared as: Present, not widely distributed and under official control.
